The work, nsa (no strings attached), is comprised of four sculptural objects: masc4masc, fetish, sub and can accom. The names of the objects reference phrases used on “dating” apps to describe your appearance, your situation, your sexual preferences and what you are looking for.
The first piece the viewer encounters is masc4masc. It is a tall, wide façade that partially blocks the entrance to the gallery space. It is an abstracted architectural fragment of a window above a shop and appropriates the blank, aggressive, masculine forms of minimalist art. Through the window opening the viewer can see the other elements and other viewers in the gallery space.
In the lower portion, a lightbox represents the sign above the shop, but the sign is blank. The single fluorescent tube is reminiscent of Dan Flavin’s work. The light illuminates the floor in front of the piece, enticing the viewer towards it.
However, the upper portion towers over the viewer and is clad in black rubber, studded with silver screws; confronting and challenging the viewer. The smell and tactility of the rubber invite the viewer to touch the façade, but the sharpness of the screws provoke caution.
Although the piece is well crafted, it is not immaculate. The surfaces are scuffed and worn and it is covered with pencil marks used in the construction, as if it is still work in progress.
As the viewer walks around the structure, they find that the façade has no depth. It is constructed like a piece of film or stage scenery, revealing how it has been constructed and assembled from behind.
The second piece the viewer encounters is fetish. It is fabricated from orange laminated plywood and takes the form of a delivery pallet. Unlike a usual pallet, it is not practical and disposable and is totally unsuitable to transport consumer goods. It is not quickly and roughly made from left over timber. It is delicate, well finished and smooth to the touch. Like a modern reproduction of a design classic in a high-end furniture retailer, this object is designed to be coveted and worshipped.
Sub is also a custom-made pallet. But unlike fetish it is constructed from more practical MDF and timber and is supporting the final piece, can accom.
can accom takes the form of the corner of a room with a window opening facing back into the gallery space towards masc4masc. It is raised slightly like a stage and like masc4masc is scuffed and annotated and constructed like a stage set. However, unlike masc4masc, it is totally blank, undecorated and unfinished. It is the interior space related to, but not connected to the exterior façade of masc4masc.
Together in the gallery space, these objects create multiple layers of increasingly private and intimate spaces which the viewer can progress through. In each space, the openings in the pieces create the opportunity for the viewer to see and be seen by the other viewers both inside and outside the gallery space. The work relies on the viewer to activate it.
